Brushing Your Kid's Teeth

It’s never too early to get children in the habit of good oral care. Of course, it’s up to parents to take the “first steps.” Finding new ways to model good dental habits and practice them with your kids is key. The sooner kids begin to take charge of their own teeth, the happier and healthier they (and you) will be. And the payoffs over a lifetime are immeasurable.

Don’t Worry-You’re Not Alone
If you think it’s a challenge to teach your kids good oral care, you’re in good company. Tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases. And studies show that almost 50% of kids between six and eight have had at least one cavity.1 These are just a couple of reasons why it’s so important to help kids understand right from the start that proper dental habits are a smart idea.

TMJ/TMD Dental Treatment

TMJ/TMD - Proper Bite Alignment Treatment Helps You Say 'Goodbye' to Headaches and Jaw Pain!

Are you aware that the pain you suffer from in your neck and shoulders may be the result of misaligned dental occlusion (i.e. your bite)? Excess tension in your jaw muscles may also cause frequent headaches and aching or popping jaws. If your teeth have been worn down over the years or lost due to accident or dental disease, your jaw is not able to settle into a naturally relaxed position. It is time to restore your dental occlusion, allowing your jaw to return to the position that nature intended, so you can stop living with the pain. We will consult with you regarding your treatment options and the best way to resolve the problems before they become worse.

Encourage Children with a Healthy Smile!

Choosing Your Child's Dentist is Like Choosing Their Pediatrician

Teaching good habits early, in an environment that's comfortable and fun, is crucial for establishing a lifetime of strong oral health. From a young age, children's teeth are very susceptible to cavities due to many factors. First, children lack the necessary coordination to brush well on their own. Because of this, it is paramount for parents to assist in their child's daily dental care. This encourages both thorough cleaning and the development of proper dental habits. Little kids also tend to eat frequently throughout the day (grazing). This results in an extended exposure to food acids (every time you eat you make acid), which may cause more cavities.

Lack of cleaning means teeth are more at risk to potential decay when food and juice acid comes in contact with them, speeding up the development of cavities. The good news is that identifying poor dietary and hygiene habits, along with applying a fluoride varnish to the mineralizing teeth, can drastically reduce the odds of your child developing a cavity.

Wine Tasters, Beware

Wine tasters may be at high risk for enamel stain and erosion.

Why? Sipping wine many times a day -- and swishing it in the mouth -- increases the enamel's exposure to damaging acids.

That is why it's better to drink a glass of wine, soda, or sweet tea with a meal instead of sipping it over several hours.

Your Mouth Is Not a Bottle Opener!

Your mother was right: Never open bottles, packages, or other containers with your teeth. You might permanently chip or crack the enamel.

Gnawing on anything else -- like pens or fingernails -- or chomping down on seeds, popcorn kernels, or ice could have the same result.

What is a Cavity and What Causes Tooth Decay?

What to Know About Cavities and Tooth Decay

While cavities are very common dental problems in both children and adults, they can be prevented. Find out what you need to know to stay ahead of cavities.

What Exactly Is a Cavity?
It’s actually pretty simple. Decay (or softening of enamel) happens over time and the result is a cavity-a defect left in the tooth. Teeth are covered with a hard protective top layer called enamel. But once the enamel is weakened by acids produced by bacteria, a pit or cavity is formed in or on the tooth surface.

What Causes Cavities and Tooth Decay?
While it’s ultimately acid-producing bacteria that leads to cavity formation, the most common cause of bacterial growth is inadequate daily brushing and flossing. Certain foods (carbs) and sugary drinks contribute to cavity formation-bacteria metabolize these carbohydrates and sugars and produce cavity-forming acids.

Foods That Stain Your Teeth: Tea and Your Teeth

Although tea has a reputation as a healthy beverage, it may not be the best choice when it comes to keeping your teeth white. Dentists say tea -- especially the basic black variety -- can cause more stains than coffee. However, recent studies have found that even herbal teas and white teas have the potential to erode enamel and cause tooth staining.
